About The Project
Division 15 acted as the prime contractor for UBC’s Steam-to-Hot Water Conversion District Energy project, one of the largest in North America. We earned two contracts on phases five through nine of this multiphase project, which ultimately replaced 14 kilometres of 90-year-old steam piping, and connected to more than 160 buildings.
We are proud to have partnered on multiple projects with UBC, a true leader in sustainability.
We were proud to earn the 2012 VRCA Silver Award of Excellence and 2016 VRCA Gold Award of Excellence for our work, which included the installation of over 11.5 kilometers of an underground distribution piping system (DPS), for the supply of heating water to existing buildings. We also installed 39 Energy Transfer Stations (ETS), in parallel to existing steam infrastructure, retrofitted within existing buildings, complete with heat exchangers, pumps and associated controls.
Division 15 converted existing infrastructure from steam to a more efficient hot water system, allowing a significant reduction of heat distribution losses. The project was completed within six months of initial targeted completion despite significant delays due to unknown underground conditions and various scheduling coordination for installation within buildings.
