About The Project
This project earned Division 15 the 2011 Silver VRCA Award of Excellence. The project included the complete reconstruction of an existing structure, housing modern research laboratories, teaching labs, classrooms and academic offices totalling 152,000 sq ft. The LEED ® Gold project required new mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing and fire protection. An advanced hydronic system using water to water heat pumps and UBC’s steam utility network for both heating and cooling was installed.
We were proud to have helped construct this LEED(R) Gold certified facility.
Heating and cooling was primarily achieved through fan coils, VAV boxes and radiators. A significant increase in water efficiency was achieved by using low flow fixtures and waterless urinals. Other features included:
- Stormwater collection to bioswale (subsoil drainage).
- Energy recovery system from the building’s exhaust system, through the laboratory exhaust fans (LEFs).
